A Simple History of Cold-Process Soap Making

A Simple History of Cold-Process Soap Making

Soap making is not a modern trend although we are encouraged that more and more people are becoming aware of the amazing benefits of cold-processed soaps for their skin. It’s an ancient craft, rooted in practicality, stewardship, and care for the household. Long before store shelves were lined with brightly colored bottles, families made soap at home using simple ingredients and time-tested methods. Cold-process soap making is one of the oldest and most traditional methods for creating soap, and it’s the method we use at The Makers Table.

A Brief History of Cold-Process Soap

The earliest records of soap date back thousands of years to ancient Babylon and Egypt, where fats were mixed with alkaline substances to create cleansing bars. For centuries, families across Europe and early America made soap as part of regular household work (often once or twice a year), using rendered animal fats and lye made from wood ash.

This process became known as cold-process soap making, because the soap is not cooked over heat. Instead, oils and lye are combined and poured into molds, where the soap slowly hardens and cures over several weeks. The result is a gentle, long-lasting bar that retains the natural glycerin produced during saponification.

Cold-process soap was never meant to be flashy. It was meant to be useful, nourishing, and dependable. Which are qualities we still value today.

Why Cold-Process Soap Is Still Loved Today

Many people are rediscovering cold-process soap because it allows full control over ingredients. There are no unnecessary fillers, harsh detergents, or mystery additives, just oils, lye, and care.

At The Makers Table, we appreciate this method because it reflects stewardship: using good ingredients well, avoiding waste, and creating something meaningful for the family. We enjoy growing our own florals to dry and adorn the tops of our soaps. Gardening is a big part of our time spent together with our family and community.

A Craft Worth Keeping

Cold-process soap making carries wisdom and thoughtful tradition. One that values care over convenience and intention over excess. It’s a craft passed down through generations, still meaningful today for families who appreciate making and using things with purpose.

If you’d like to take part in the process, we offer in-person workshops and simple educational blogs to help you begin. If not, we invite you to enjoy the results of this timeless craft through our handcrafted soaps, available online and at our markets. Thank you for being here.

We’re grateful to share this tradition with you.

With love, Kami B.
